  • Badger Rock Middle School --The lottery is technically open as of December 1st (link) for application 
  • Dear Families:

    This week, your student learned about an opportunity to enter their creative work into a local contest called the Greater Dane Anthology Project. They can enter art, a cartoon, poetry, a short story, or a persuasive essay. Here's the slide deck that was shared with your student. If your student is interested in participating in this, they'll need to get their work to Amy Rountree, the Advanced Learning Specialist at Randall, by December 16.

  • The Wright lottery is open and and closes on  January 27, 2023 @ 4:00pm
  • The Randall School Spelling Bee will be on December 15 at 12:45 pm in the auditorium. Families of participating students may attend this event if they would like. Students can choose to participate, though if more than 3 students from a fifth grade classroom are interested, there will be a classroom bee to choose three students to attend. If you would like a copy of the school spelling bee study list, you can access it here. The National Spelling Bee draws its word list from children's books, and this year's book list is also available here.

5th Grade Math this week....

  • December Number Corner--This month we will be creating and discussing scatter plots using personal height and feet measurement data.  We will also be looking at a classification of quadrilaterals and their unique characteristics based on pairs of parallel sides, congruent sides and congruent angles. 
    • Ask your kiddo why a why a square is always a kite and a rhombus, but a kite is not always a square and a rhombus is not always a kite??  And, is a rhombus a square every single time?? 
  • On Monday, we took the Unit 3 Post-assessment (These will be coming home!!)
  • On Wednesday and Thursday students took the Bridges Interim Assessment to see what they have learned and retained so far this year in our math curriculum
  • Then we started Unit 4 --Multiplication and Division strategies for whole numbers and fractions with a pre-test.
  • Yes....a week of tests. Sorry about that, 5th graders!  
  • Next week we will be revisiting some multiplication strategies for multi-digit multiplication.

Literacy this week....

  •  Our theme for Module 2--Rainforests. 
  • This week we started by comparing and contrasting two texts about rainforests.  We found evidence and answered the question "Why do scientists explore the rainforest?"
  • We did some vocabulary work and added to our word walls.
  • We continued to examine and compare various graphic organizers and use them with nonfiction texts to gather new information.
Science this week....
  • Our new unit is:  Modeling Matter
  • Our guiding question for this unit is: What happens when two substances are mixed together?
  • We finished up the chapter where we examined: Why do some salad dressings have sediments and other do not?
  • We began our third and final chapter where we will investigate: Why can salad dressing ingredients separate again after being mixed?
  • We plan to finish up this unit by Winter Break. 
  • After Winter Break, we will do a mini-unit on working  with maps of the United States before we begin our next science unit: Earth Systems.

5th Grade Math this week....

  • November Number Corner-- This month we will be looking at how to classify triangles based on lengths of sides and angles.  In addition we will be locating the position of these triangles on a coordinate grid to learn about ordered pairs.  Finally, we will also be using the metric system and comparing how meters relate to centimeters, decimeters, decameters and kilometers. 
  • This week worked on drawing and comparing decimals.  Next, we moved on to learning how to round decimals to specific place values.  We also made some comparisons with decimal and fraction equivalencies.  Finally, we started to use our understanding of decimal comparisons to plot out decimals on a number line. 
  • After the long weekend, we will continue with decimal equivalencies and begin  look at metric conversions.  

Literacy this week....

  • This week we worked on analyzing a model of a directors' note. 
  •  Groups then worked together to take notes, plan and write a draft of a directors' note for their monologue scenario.  
  • Finally, students were asked to independently write a directors' note on their own. a monologue and then using this to help us begin putting together our group 
  • We did some peer critique with one another to help revise our writing.
  • Students practiced their fluency while reading their monologues aloud.
  • Next week we will present our monologues to the class!
  •  Our theme for this first quarter is Human Rights. 
  • After the long weekend, we will begin Module 2--Rainforests.

Science this week....
  • Our new unit is:  Modeling Matter
  • Our guiding question for this unit is: What happens when two substances are mixed together?

  • November Number Corner-- This month we will be looking at how to classify triangles based on lengths of sides and angles.  In addition we will be locating the position of these triangles on a coordinate grid to learn about ordered pairs.  Finally, we will also be using the metric system and comparing how meters relate to centimeters, decimeters, decameters and kilometers. 
  • This week we started Unit 3 with some adding and subtracting decimals using money and multiplying/dividing by 10.  Then we talked about place values of whole numbers and decimals and making connections between the values.  Finally, we worked with making models of, reading, writing and comparing decimals.  
  • Next week we will continue with the work as well as look at how to round decimals to different place values. 

Literacy this week....

  • This week we worked on analyzing a model monologue and then using this to help us begin putting together our group monologues using scenes from the book Esperanza Rising. 
  • We did some peer critique with one another to help revise our monologues.
  • We also did some work with perfect verb tenses.
  •  Our theme for this first quarter is Human Rights.

  • Next week we will begin Unit 3 where we will be working with whole numbers and decimal place values.

  • This week we continued to work on composing a literary essay based on Esperanza Rising as we finish up Unit 2 in our Module 1.
  • Unit 3 will focus on our final presentation for Module 1 that will involve monologues and group work.
  •  Our theme for this first quarter is Human Rights.

5th Grade Math this week....

  • October Number Corner-- Our carrots are looking pretty scary! Only one more weekend to see how they hold up.  For November Number Corner starting next week, we will be looking at how to classify triangles based on lengths of sides and angles.  in addition we will be looking at triangles on a coordinate grid to learn about ordered pairs.  Finally, we will also be using the metric system and comparing how meters relate to centimeters, decimeters, decameters and kilometers. 
  • Unit 2 in our Bridges Curriculum is almost completed.  Classes took a unit test today or will complete/finish it on Monday.  Then we will end up our unit by taking a few days to look at GCF and LCM work before we jump into Unit 3 where we will be looking at whole numbers and decimal place values.

Literacy this week....

  • This week we created some two-voice poetry and worked on writing a literary essay. 
  •  Our theme for this first quarter is Human Rights. 

Science this week....
  • We "Zoomed" with an astronaut on Thursday to end our unit on Patterns of Earth and Sky

  • We ask that you add the finishing touch to our Student Success Night (Tuesday, October 25) by donating a dessert to accompany our family pizza party - maybe a dozen of your family’s favorite treat, easy to serve. Desserts may be brought to the office throughout the day on October 25 or to the cafeteria when you arrive that evening. Be sure to put your name on any plate/pan you wish to have returned. 

    Please email your classroom teacher to let us know if you are willing to help. Thank you!

  • Feeding the need to Read

    From the month of October through March our Raccoons are helping to support local restaurants, and earning free meals, through reaching their reading goals.  Every month that a scholar reaches their reading goal they will receive a coupon for a free meal that can be redeemed at the following local participating restaurants (Craftsman Table & Tap, Everly, Hubbard Avenue Diner, LuigĂ­’s Pizza, Monty’s Blue Plate Diner or Tex Tubb’s Taco Palace) Scholars will also receive a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut each month that they reach their goal.  Thank you for supporting our raccoons!

  • Unit 2 in our Bridges Curriculum will focus on some fraction work.  This week we took a checkpoint to see how we are doing so far.  We will finish up this work next week and take a Unit 2 assessment.  Then, we will take a few days to look at GCF and LCM work before we jump into Unit 3 where we will be looking at whole numbers and decimal place values.

Literacy this week....

  • This week we continued with the second unit of study with our text Esperanza Rising. We finished reading the book and took a mid-unit assessment this week.  Ask your 5th grader what they were asked to do. 
  •  Our theme for this first quarter is Human Rights. 

Science this week....
  • We finished up our first unit in science is called Patterns of Earth and Sky.
  • Our next unit will be called:  Modeling Matter. We will begin this after our Student Success Night so you can see the work we have completed with Patterns of Earth and Sky.

  •  Our theme for this first quarter is Human Rights.

  • Our next unit will be called:  Modeling Matter.
  • We engaged in a virtual field trip with the University of WI- Madison Science Festival titled "From Bacteria to Biofuels" on Thursday afternoon.
  • Some students were even able to visit a squash farm on Wednesday (virtually).

Bus Routes

 MMSD's Transportation Department has notified Randall of a change in the morning pick up times for both the Red and Yellow Dot School bus routes. Please refer to the screenshots below for updated pick up times. This change will go into effect on Tuesday morning - October 11. The change is due to the buses getting caught in traffic causing them to run late to the next school.

Please see the information below and let the Randall School Office know if you have any questions.
