This is the paper that went home today, Friday, September 23, that shows the many different strategies we use to solve multiplication problems. Please ask your child to see their paper, and go over the different strategies with them. You could even grab some paper and try a few more problems, how about these:

5th Grade Math this week....

  • For Number Corner this month, we are focussing on showing the relationship between decimals and fractions using money and time.  We are also starting to notice how equivalent fractions and decimals are made.  In addition, the concept of volume is introduced while we work with three dimensions of measurement on paper and with our cubes.
  • Our first unit of study is on Multiplication and Volume.  This week we continued to work on our multiplication strategies with the box method and ratio tables to work to help us find area, volume and surface area.
  • Next week we will finish up Unit 1 with an assessment on Friday.

Literacy this week....

  • Week Two of our new literacy curriculum allowed us to read more of our Module 1 text Esperanza Rising and have some great discussions around human rights and how these rights were being violated throughout our reading.
  • We also worked on some vocabulary words and how to quote accurately from a text.
  •  Our theme for this first quarter is Human Rights.
  • While reading Esperanza Rising we are reading and discussing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Abridged for Youth. Here is a copy of what they are reading and studying, for you to discuss at home with your student.
