Week of September 6

New News....

  • Chromebooks came home this week.  Please make sure your 5th graders fully charges this every night and brings it to school every day.
  • Strings will start the week of September 19th....more info to come!!
  • Would you like to volunteer on field trips or in the classroom?  If so, MMSD is now requiring everyone to have a Level 2 certification.  What does this mean?  Please check out the link.  Fair warning....it is time consuming. If you were a level 2 last year,  you will receive a email to "renew" before it expires. (This is quite easy to do is what we hear. )
Interested in volunteering at Randall or chaperoning a field trip with your student's class? - start the process by visiting the Volunteering page at MMSD’s website.

5th Grade Math this week....

  • For Number Corner this month, we are focussing on showing the relationship between decimals and fractions using money and time.  We are also starting to notice how equivalent fractions and decimals are made.  In addition, the concept of volume is introduced while we work with three dimensions of measurement on paper and with our cubes.
  • Our first unit of study is on Multiplication and Volume.  So far we have talked about what math we will cover this year, what a math student looks like, and how students view themselves as math students.  Then, we worked with some basic multiplication through the use of a couple games  and ended the week with some more work around volume using story problems.

Literacy this week....

  • While we are all getting to know each other a bit more, this week was busy with some shorter literacy activities that allowed us to learn about one another.
  • We read some various books about families and how we can contribute to our classroom and Randall community.
  • Students had the opportunity to do a couple writing projects to ease back into the school setting.

Science this week....
  • Our first unit in science is called Patterns of Earth and Sky.
  • Our first chapter question is :  Why don't we see a lot of stars in the daytime?

SELS this week...

  • Recognizing and celebrating our different identities
